Understanding the EYFS and Ofsted: A Guide for Parents
At Skools Inn Nursery, we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework, which sets the standards for learning, development, and care for children from birth to age five in England. The EYFS is designed to ensure that every child gets the best possible start in life and is fully prepared for school.

What is the EYFS?
The EYFS is a government framework that guides how nurseries and early years settings support children’s development. It focuses on helping children learn through play, exploration, and hands-on experiences in a safe and nurturing environment.

The EYFS is divided into seven key areas of learning:

Prime Areas:
Communication and Language
Physical Development
Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Specific Areas:
Literacy
Mathematics
Understanding the World
Expressive Arts and Design

At Skools Inn Nursery, we carefully plan activities and experiences around these areas, tailored to each child’s interests and stage of development. Your child’s Key Person will observe and assess their progress, ensuring they are supported and challenged appropriately.

Who is Ofsted?
Ofsted (Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills) is the official body that inspects and regulates early years settings, schools, and other educational institutions in England. Their role is to ensure that nurseries like ours provide high-quality care and education.

After an inspection, Ofsted gives a grade based on their findings:
Outstanding – The setting is exceptional in all areas.
Good – The setting is performing well and meeting expectations.
Requires Improvement – The setting is not yet good but has the potential to improve.
Inadequate – The setting is not providing an acceptable standard of care or education.

You can view our latest Ofsted report here and our rating on the Ofsted website or our Ofsted report is hung up in the main Reception of Nursery for you to read at any point.
